Sydney’s Fastest Growing Municipalities
Following the release of the 2006 Census data by the Australian Bureau of Statistics Landsburys has commenced analysis of the data.
The following graph shows Sydney’s top 10 fastest growing municipalities in terms of number. With the Sydney LGA which encompasses the CBD, South Sydney, East Sydney, Darlinghurst, Chinatown, Newtown, etc.

In the Sydney LGA it is evident that a number of high rise developments are taking place or have recently been competed. This has amounted to large growth in the area with Sydney LGA experiencing a 35% increase in population from 2001 to 2006 that equates to an increase of 7% per annum. Sydney LGA was the fastest growing LGA in the Greater Metropolitan area of Sydney.
From 2001 to 2006 Auburn (16%), Strathfield (14%), Baulkham Hills (14%) and Camden (12%) experienced high levels of population growth. Their population growth exceeded any other LGA in the Greater Metropolitan area of Sydney after Sydney LGA.
Over the same time frame the population in the Leichhardt LGA declined by 20%, making Leichhardt the largest loser of population in the 5 years to 2006 (this is due to LGA boundary changes). Leichhardt now houses less than 50,000 people which is small compared to 2001 when the population was over 61,000. Campbelltown (-2%), Marrickville (-2%), Fairfield (-1%), and Woollahra (-1%) were the only other LGA’s that experienced a decrease in population in the 2001 to 2006 period.
