Net Population Growth

October 2007

The following graph illustrates the net population growth in New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria.  Net growth totals natural increase, net overseas migration and net interstate migration.
From 1997/98 to 2000/01 i.e. the run up to the Olympics, New South Wales had the highest net population growth.  Between 2001/02 and 2005/06, Queensland’s net population growth overtook New South Wales.  This trend can be attributed to the growth in New South Wales property prices thus creating an affordability issue.  As Queensland’s property prices have risen, assisted by the increasing demand, the number of movers to the state has started to decline slightly.  Victoria’s growth has remained relatively steady and peaked in 2005/06.

If the current trend recorded in the first half of 2006/07 continues the net New South Wales population growth is anticipated to be the second highest period following 2000/01.  Victoria is expected to also record the second highest year of growth after the growth witnessed in 2005/06.  Queensland’s net population growth is not expected set any new records.
